K-Movie : The President's Barber

The Forrest gump-like "President's Barber" takes a series of defining moments in modern Korean history and filters them through the point-of-view of the so-called "common man." The result is a blurring of fact and fiction that is at its best a poignant social commentary of the 1960s and '70s and at its worst an over-simplification of a complex reality. The "common man" here is played by veteran actor Song Gang-ho, who puts on his usual impeccable performance as Han-mo, a barber living in Hyoja-dong within walking distance of Chong Wa Dae, the residence of the nation's president. "The President's Barber" takes full liberty with historical accounts for dramatic and comic effect - such as adding the element of diarrhea to one of the more sensitive moments in the 1960s - and as a historical lesson, the film leaves much to be desired.
