Cha Seung-won plays Kim Bong-du, the Mr. Kim of the film’s title, a young but already slightly bitter elementary school teacher. Cynical about the whole education system, Kim lives for taking bribes from the parents, euphemistically called "white envelopes" because of the way they’re usually given. For Kim, the envelopes completely dictate his treatment of the students. It can mean absolute loving affection, or his never-ending wrath, which includes special "drills" in P.E. classes. One day, during a particularly grueling drill, a student collapses and lands in the hospital. In order to quell the mess, the principal orders Kim to volunteer himself for a transfer to a small, rundown school in the country. Though reluctant to give up his envelopes, Kim accepts the position and soon finds himself in a single-class school, with only five students, surrounded by naive but well-meaning country folks.
