Flower Island is a true UFO in the Korean production landscape. It is neither a mawkish melodrama nor a spectacular Thelma & Louise-style road movie. Its slow rhythm and overall low-key dramatic nuances make it a fragile directorial debut. But Song's portrayal of a friendship between three generations of downcast women comes as a precious testimony in a country where male-oriented Confucian rules are still strong, and, according to Take Care of My Cat director Jeong Jae-eun, "the extent to which discrimination towards women can manifest itself in everyday life is only shown to a certain degree, with limitations, in movies and on TV." Flower Island premiered at Venice 2001 and won a Special Mention at the 16th Fribourg International Film Festival.
